Volunteer: Adult Literacy Tutor

Literacy tutors help adults improve their reading, writing, and speaking skills through one-on-one tutoring sessions to tutor them in reading and writing. Prior to being matched with a learner, volunteers are encouraged to take advantage of free training.

Requirements

Must commit to a minimum of six months of volunteering Must be able to meet weekly for 1 ½ hours Must be able to work with a diverse group of people All prospective volunteers must undergo a background check.

Volunteer: Homework Coach

In the Homework Center the volunteers, or Homework Coaches, work with children in kindergarten through eighth grade in all subject matters.  Children are assisted on a as-needed basis, meaning children will not be paired up with the same volunteer every visit.  Homework Coaches may help numerous students during any one shift. 

The Center is open Monday - Thursday from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. during the academic school year. Volunteers can schedule themselves for shifts via our online scheduling system.

Volunteers sort and organize returned materials into appropriate shelving categories on carts. Materials are categorized alphabetically or numerically based on the collection. Then the materials are returned to their proper location on library shelves.

Requirements

Attention to detail. Patient and methodical worker.  Understanding of alphabetizing and the Dewey Decimal System.  Physical ability to bend, stretch, kneel and lift, as well as push loaded books carts. Capable of working with the public in a positive and professional manner.  Must commit to at least two hours a week for at least three months.
