Opportunities From: City of Camarillo Volunteers

Literacy tutors help adults improve their reading, writing, and speaking skills through one-on-one tutoring sessions to tutor them in reading and writing. Prior to being matched with a learner, volunteers are encouraged to take advantage of free training.

Requirements

Must commit to a minimum of six months of volunteering Must be able to meet weekly for 1 ½ hours Must be able to work with a diverse group of people All prospective volunteers must undergo a background check.

Specialized Skills/Training

No experience is necessary, but volunteers are urged to take advantage of free online training and resources.

 Position Description

In the Homework Center the volunteers, or Homework Coaches, work with children in kindergarten through eighth grade in all subject matters.  Children are assisted on a as-needed basis, meaning children will not be paired up with the same volunteer every visit.  Homework Coaches may help numerous students during any one shift. 

The Center is open Monday - Thursday from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. during the academic school year. Volunteers can schedule themselves for shifts via our online scheduling system. 

 Requirements

Must be patient and comfortable working with children ages 5-14. Must commit to a minimum of 15 hours over three months.  Adults must undergo a background check.

Position Description

Volunteers sort and organize returned materials into appropriate shelving categories on carts. Materials are categorized alphabetically or numerically based on the collection. Then the materials are returned to their proper location on library shelves.

Requirements

Attention to detail. Patient and methodical worker.  Understanding of alphabetizing and the Dewey Decimal System.  Physical ability to bend, stretch, kneel and lift, as well as push loaded books carts. Capable of working with the public in a positive and professional manner.  Must commit to at least two hours a week for at least three months.

Position Description

Summer Reading Club teen volunteers help facilitate the summer reading program by staffing registration tables, assisting with special events, and helping with various tasks including shelving, program preparations, book reviews, and more. Volunteers are scheduled in two-hour increments, with a maximum of 4 hours per day. 

Requirements

Must be 13 to 18 years old.  Must be able to follow directions. Must be patient with children. Must be able to handle busy and loud environments. Must attend a scheduled training session.  Must commit to at least 10 hours during the summer program.

Position Description

Technology Coaches assist library staff in instructing patrons on the basic usage of devices and the library's digital resources availble to patrons. Topics range from using email and Google, to how to access e-books and e-audio, and more.  

Requirements

Some technological experience with the following devices: tablets, laptops, smart phones, desktops, and e-readers.

Patient with non-tech savvy individuals. Proficiency in some of the following: photo and document management, setting up email accounts, general internet usage including using Google, Microsoft Office software, social media, and borrowing e-materials. Able to work with a diverse population. Must be at least 16 years of age. Volunteers must attend a scheduled training session.

Position Description

Event and Programming Volunteers assist library staff with regularly scheduled programming, as well as special events held throughout the year. 

Responsibilities may include: 

Assist staff/presenter with set-up, equipment, and materials. Greet and seat patrons prior to events.  Answer basic questions or direct patrons to correct library staff. Help with registration tables, count the number of event attendees. Clean up after program. 

Requirements

Ability to follow directions. Confidence speaking to library patrons and the public. Professional dress and demeanor.

Members of the Teen Advisory Board plan, prepare and run special events for the library.  They also provide the library with feedback about teen programs, services and materials.  Members are expected to assist with events and preparation as needed, and usually volunteer about eight hours per month.
